What is mango salsa?
A traditional salsa is a popular condiment that is paired with tacos or other Mexican food and is primarily made with tomatoes, onions, peppers and herbs.
When we want to recreate the similar condiment keeping a particular fruit as the primary ingredient, we get the fruit based salsa and that is exactly what this mango salsa is!
Mangoes are a specialty of summer which is the perfect time to relish this fresh & herby condiment with your tortilla chips or tacos of your choice.
This mango salsa is an ideal choice when you gather with friends and family on a game day or just to catch up on life! Just ensure to make a large batch as I can bet it will be over within minutes!
Ingredients for mango salsa
Mango: As the recipe is called mango salsa, so of course mango is the showstopper in the show! The sweeter your mango is, the better your mango salsa will turn out.
The sweetness of mango builds a magical combination with the tartness of lime juice and the mild kick of jalapenos whereas the peppers & onion add the much needed crunch!
Capsicum / Bell pepper: I insist you add both the green and red capsicums as the combination of red & green with orange colored mango creates a stunning visual appeal that everyone will start eating with their eyes first!
Capsicums or bell peppers are must-add ingredients in your mango salsa as they not only add colors but also add a delicious crunch!
Onion: This somewhat sweet yet pungent veggie will add a subtle crunch along with some kick to your salsa. Don’t skip it!
Jalapeno: Of course, how can your mango salsa be a real salsa without a generous amount of jalapeno! I had to use bottled jalapenos which are preserved in a brine as that was the only option available to me.
If you happen to have fresh jalapenos locally, please, by all means, use them!
Fresh coriander leaves: A fresh fruity salsa is not complete without a fresh herb and in this case it is our very own fresh coriander leaves!
We Indians love our coriander leaves and that may be one of the secret reasons why I loved this mango salsa so much!
Salt: You need to season your salsa well using your choice of salt – pink salt, table salt or kosher salt, but just adjust the amount appropriately.
Salt not only seasons your salsa, but also softens the peppers and onions while your salsa is being chilled in the refrigerator.
Lime: A fresh squeeze of lime juice rounds up your mango salsa and allows the flavors of all veggies and the fruit to mingle beautifully, rewarding you with the most stunning and mouthwatering best mango salsa ever!
Corn tortilla chips: You can taste the best of this mango salsa when scooped up with a corn tortilla chip!
Trust me on this, do not keep a big bag of tortilla chips nearby; you won’t be able to stop yourself from reaching out for one after the another!
How to make this best ever mango salsa?
Step 1: Making salsa is all about chopping! Let’s start by finely chopping the green and red capsicums which are also called bell peppers in some parts of the world.
Step 2: Finely chop the onion. Finely chop the jalapeno.
Pro tip: If you can source the fresh jalapenos locally, I highly recommend using that instead of bottled jalapenos preserved in brine. I used this sliced jalapenos in a bottle as that’s the only option available for me.
Step 3: Finely chop the fresh coriander leaves or cilantro.
Step 4: Cut 1 lime into half and another one into wedges to serve with your salsa.
Step 5: Now it’s time to assemble your mango salsa. Take a large mixing bowl and add the chopped mangoes.
Step 6: Now add the other chopped ingredients one by one – green and red capsicums, onion, jalapenos and coriander leaves.
Step 7: Season the salsa with salt to taste.
Pro tip: For my amount of mango salsa, I added 1 teaspoon of himalayan pink salt which turned out to be perfect.
Step 8: Squeeze the juice of 1 lime over the assembled ingredients.
Step 9: Now using a spatula, start mixing the salsa, but be careful to use a light hand as you only want to mix the ingredients and not mash them.
Step 10: Once all the ingredients are evenly mixed, cover the bowl with a plate or a plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.
Pro tip: You can also make this mango salsa a day ahead and chill in the refrigerator overnight. Lime juice and salt impart their magic during this chilling time making your salsa insanely delicious!
Step 11: When you are ready to serve, arrange tortilla chips on a platter and serve a generous amount of mango salsa in a bowl.
Step 12: Add the extra lime wedges on the side for a fresh squeeze of lime juice. Enjoy your mango salsa on a hot summer day!
